Utah has life without parole. A jury decides the sentence. A Panel that includes the Governor has the power to grant clemency.
Utah was the state with the first execution after the death penalty was
reinstated. Gary Gilmore, a volunteer, was executed by firing
squad in 1977, three months after his conviction.
