Wyoming has life without parole. A jury decides the sentence. The Governor has sole clemency authority.
Wyoming's first and only execution took place in 1992.
Two defendants were charged with capital murder in the death of a gay man, Matthew Shepard. Both defendants received life sentences in 1999, instead of death. Matthew Shepard's family spoke in opposition to the death penalty and many gay and lesbian groups also publicly opposed a death sentence.
